When you encounter a Pits Qimirpik narwhal, you enter the fantastical domain of one of the world's most fascinating and unusual looking animals.
The Narwhal tusk is actually a protruding canine tooth. It can grow up to 10 feet long.
Pits's narwhal is "standing" upright on its tail with its fins outstretched for balance. Our courageous whale has "brandished" his tusk and prepares for battle.
Notice the detailing on the tusk. Pits has etched the tusk to resemble a cork screw.
The meticulous attention to detail (the tail braced on the stone, the outstretched fins, perfect small eyes that look like they are staring into your eyes) is one of Pits' trademarks. You can see more of this craftsmanship in his famous owls and eagles.
Qimirpik's work is celebrated within the avant-garde circles of Inuit art.
His work can be found in Canada's National Art Gallery in Ottawa.
